Three decades. That is the window of time LL Cool J has been at the top of his game. And  the rapper/actor/mogul shows no signs of slowing.

Set to host this Sunday’s Grammy Awards, the 45 year old graces the cover of Essence magazine’s March 2013 issue to promote the gig.

Yet, while his “hustle” (like his lip licking) remains hot, LL is making sure he now puts family first.

The moment of enlightenment came when, while starring on prime-time’s drama, NCIS: Los Angeles, his wife of almost 18 years was diagnosed with cancer. It then that LL, real name James Todd Smith, realized where his prime focus needed to be.

Elaborating on his relationship with his wife, Simone Johnson, LL told Essence:

“I think, at the end of the day, as a man, you should support the woman you’re with. If she’s got a dream, you need to help make that a reality. I’m doing the best I can to do that…”

We love LL’s love for his family. Indeed, his words certainly makes for a refreshing read in an era where too many men don’t prioritize in the way he does.
