With a career that’s spanned almost four decades, and one of the most impressive acting resumes in the industry, you could definitely say Denzel Washington is about as ‘Hollywood savvy’ as they get.
He stopped by The Hollywood Reporter’s roundtable discussion, ‘The Actors,’ and dropped some major knowledge regarding the typically taboo topic of skin tone discrimination in Tinseltown.
The ladies at Hello Beautiful explored the candid insight the Academy Award winner gave to his daughter Olivia, who is an aspiring actress of a darker complexion, on the training she’ll need to survive the somewhat biased business.
‘You’re black, you’re a woman, and you’re dark-skinned at that. So you have to be a triple/quadruple threat…You gotta learn how to act. You gotta learn how to dance, sing, move onstage. That’s the only place, in my humble opinion, you really learn how to act,’ dished the ‘Flight’ actor.
He offered up his pick on the actress he’d like her to emulate, stating: ‘Look at Viola Davis. That’s who you want to be. Forget about the little pretty girls; if you’re relying on that, when you hit 40, you’re out the door. You better have some chops.’
Father knows best.
